Tomorrow I will make some pies and bread for Thanksgiving. I will make 2 pumpkin and 1 cherry. This got me to thinking about how when my family, meaning my Mom and Dad and Aunts and Uncles and Grandparents were still living what kind of pies we had. For some reason pumpkin was not really all that popular with my family. I think we had it, but mincemeat and pecan were the most popular ones. And lemon meringue and coconut cream. My Dad also liked the berry pies, like blackberry and strawberry. My husband likes pumpkin and my son cherry. I really am not all that fond of pie. My sweet tooth is more for ice cream and some cakes. An occasional piece of good chocolate is really nice. Always worrying about my weight really spoils my appetite for the food holidays. Come to think of it what holiday does not involve a lot of food. I can't think of any.

We no longer celebrate the holidays, but my favorite pie is pumpkin, esp. in the fall. I think that is because in my growing up years, the pumpkins were ready to harvest in the fall and my mother always baked those yummy pumpkin pies and canned pumpkin for the winter. I just buy "Mrs Smiths" pies in the freezer section of my grocery store and pop them in the oven, couldn't be easier.
A little cool whip and I'm good to go!
My favorites are apple and cherry. I don't worry too much about my weight on the holidays themselves. It's all that darn picking in between Thanksgiving and New Years that does me in.
BTW, I just don't get mincemeat. My mom adored the stuff. I do not.
Pumpkin pie is my very favorite! It always has been since I was a little girl and my mom would make it during the holidays. I have carried on that tradition for my children......and they look forward to eating it twice a year.
Mincemeat???? Yuk! My mother loved this pie as well as my older sister. Last year at Thanksgiving she had to have that pie.....and she ate the whole thing herself. Not at one sitting....but over a couple of days. It is disgusting! Rates right up there with fruitcakes!!!!
My favorite for holidays use to be mince meat pie when I was a kid. My aunt would make one of those, and the rest pumpkin. I wish like Gramma Ann, we didn't celebrate holidays. I'm one of those who gets down for some reason...
I have the cookbook you have posted on your post and I made the olde fashioned pumpkin pie recipe-it's ok but I really don't care much for pumpkin pie either.
Your blog is lovely and I enjoyed reading it and all of the photos of you in all your stages-how wonderful-I hope to make a collage some day like you have and with God's blessing I will grow old, have grandchildren and enjoy my years remembering times gone by and living each day to the fullest!
BLESSINGS,
Leslie
